I managed to get a lecture from a very serious security guard at the Jefferson memorial, but luckily I didn’t end up getting shipped to Guantanamo Bay.

-Superb cuisine (you could throw a rock at Italy from here).

-A rockin’ band and a wacky-cool D.J.

The result is one amazingly good time. Lot’s of laughter, a few tears of joy, and a wedding that will be talked about for a long, long time. Congratulations to Katie and Brian and many thanks as well!

I recently rendezvoused with Corina and Jonas for such an outing. We happened to pick one of the hottest days of the year, so we decided to kick things off with some cold drinks and pizza before we got underway with pictures. With full stomachs we set off and explored the town, finding lots of great backgrounds everywhere we went. Every time I visit Rapperswil I’m blown away by its charm and photography potential. They should have named it “Photogswil.”

Thanks to Corina and Jonas for their creativity and willingness to go for it on a hot day! Hopefully it’s a bit cooler in October for their big day.

Man, I love my job!

Whoa baby! It’s been a fantastically busy June and I’ve neglected the blog for a little too long. This month I kept myself pretty busy with engagement shoots, weddings, and portrait sessions alike. Lots and lots of fun behind the camera. In exactly one week I will be landing in Seattle (my home town in the USA) to catch up with family and friends, as well as shoot the wedding of my good friends Ann and Andy up in Vancouver, B.C. Really looking forward to that! It’s going to be an awesome summer!!

I’ve been spending some time lately photographing a group of competitive junior rowers who train on Lake Zuerich and on the Rhine river in Eglisau, Switzerland. It’s been a blast being out on the water with them. More than a decade ago I was in their shoes as a rower at Mt. Baker Junior crew in Seattle. The commitment and drive which are necessary to be successful in competitive rowing represent a serious physical and mental challenge.

My friend Daniel Protz, who competed as an Olympic rower with the U.S. National Team, is coaching the SeeClub Zuerich junior team and I really enjoy watching him instill a sense of intensity in his team. It’s somewhat fitting (if you know Dan) that he’s out there coaching with a recently sustained broken back. He’s a person who doesn’t seem to care much for obstacles.

I’ll continue photographing this project until I feel like I have a clear story line and solid group of photos for publication. It’s been fun to experiment and tune up my sports photography eye which feels out of practice entirely. On Friday I experimented with some off camera lights triggered by remote control to go for a look I’ve not yet seen in crew photography. This shot with the train in the background was made just as the boat was leaving my “lighting zone,” so the exposure is not as ideal as it was a few seconds earlier. But I find the train and sunset hard to pass up. 

A few weeks back my friend Kat Steger and her husband came up to Winterthur from Basel to strut their stuff in front of my camera. I met these guys at a Swiss Strobist gathering in Interlaken earlier this year and we’ve kept in touch and exchanged lots of ideas since then.

Kat is working on her own modeling portfolio and I needed to get my creative juices flowing, so we rendezvoused and headed toward a location that I’ve been eyeballin’ for a while now. Our grocery store parking lot here in Winterthur. Lot’s of line, texture, pattern, and open space. Kat rocked the poses and we laughed at ourselves a lot. It was fun.

I’ll be heading back again. Who wants to come with?
